Fees and deposits

What it costs to apply for and renew residency in Gibraltar, including when a deposit is required.

Fees

Fee Amount
Residency application £250
Each dependant included in your application £250
Annual renewal £20

For example, applying with a partner and one child is £250 for you plus £250 for each of the two dependants.

Note:

If you are self-employed or your business is new, you may also need to pay a deposit. A deposit applies to businesses and the self-employed, not to employees. See deposits below.

If you live in Gibraltar without a permit

Warning:

If you live in Gibraltar without a valid residence permit, you can be fined up to £2,500.

You can appeal a penalty to the Supreme Court within 28 days of the notice.

When you need to pay a deposit

A deposit applies to businesses and self-employed people, not to employees of an established business.

You’ll need to pay a deposit in advance if either:

  • the business employing you has been trading for less than 12 months, or
  • you are self-employed and have not previously been registered as self-employed

How the deposit is calculated

The deposit is the total of two parts:

  1. Social insurance — the total employee and employer social insurance contributions for the first year of employment. This part depends on your salary.
  2. Tax — the tax payable on the average gross annual earnings in Gibraltar (£37,500) at 25%, which is £9,375.

Because the social insurance part depends on your salary, the total deposit varies from one applicant to another.

When the deposit is returned

The deposit is returned when the business stops trading. If your application is unsuccessful, any deposit you paid is refunded within 30 days. The Government can use its discretion to reduce the deposit in certain defined circumstances.

Note:

No refunds are given if a residency application made through the business route is later refused. See making a business application.
